How do I size a dehumidifier for my basement?

Why does the DOE 2019 rating matter for sizing?

Before 2019, dehumidifiers were tested at 80°F and 60% relative humidity, which inflated pint numbers. The new DOE test runs at 65°F and 60% RH, a more realistic basement condition, so every model's rated capacity dropped by roughly 15-30%. A "30-pint" unit bought today pulls a similar amount of water as an old "50-pint" unit did on the shelf a decade ago. When should you size up one step?

The AHAM chart is a starting point measured in laboratory-like conditions. Five basement realities justify moving up one capacity step before you buy.

One step up is insurance; three steps up is waste. A dramatically oversized unit reaches setpoint quickly and short-cycles, which means less dwell time across the coil, uneven drying and extra compressor wear for the same result. Getting within one step of correct is the goal.

The opposite error costs more money. An undersized unit never reaches setpoint, so it never cycles off — runtime, not nameplate wattage, is what drives the electricity bill.

A worked sizing example

A 1,400 sq ft unfinished basement in Ohio, measured at 68% RH in July at 63°F, with a washer and dryer below grade. Chart row: 1,000-1,500 sq ft, very damp → 40 pints. Adjustment for a cold, unfinished space: one step up. Result: a 50-pint unit with low-temperature auto-defrost, continuously drained, set to 50% RH — or 60 pints if the owner wants headroom for a wetter-than-average season.

Does a crawl space use the same chart?

No. Crawl spaces run colder and are usually unconditioned, so standard portables frost up and stall. The pint figure matters less than the temperature rating — look for a unit rated to operate down to 40-50°F and size it for the encapsulated volume, not the finished-room table above.
