Why does my dehumidifier ice up in the basement?
Compressor units frost when the coil temperature falls below freezing, which usually means the basement air is too cold for the model, airflow is restricted by a dirty filter or blocked intake, or the defrost function has failed. Check the model's minimum rated operating temperature first.
Why is the basement still musty at 45% humidity?
Odor comes from microbial growth on materials that are already wet or previously colonized, not from the air itself. Drying the air stops new growth but does not remove existing colonies on cardboard, carpet pad, drywall paper or framing. Those materials have to be cleaned or discarded.
When should I stop troubleshooting and call someone?
Standing water, water entering during every rain, sewage backup, mold covering more than roughly 10 square feet, growth inside wall cavities or ductwork, and bowing or widening structural cracks all warrant a qualified professional rather than another appliance adjustment.
Can a dehumidifier remove mold that is already there?
