How the estimate is calculated
Monthly operating cost = watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours per day × 30 × electricity rate. Daily cost drops the ×30, annual cost uses ×365. The default rate of $0.16 per kWh is the U.S. residential average from the Energy Information Administration; rates vary widely by state and season, so replacing it with the figure from your own utility bill gives a much closer estimate.

Why real bills differ from the estimate
A dehumidifier does not draw full wattage continuously. It cycles off when the space reaches the setpoint, draws less in a defrost cycle, and works harder in July than in October. Treat this as a planning estimate: use full-hour assumptions for the damp season and lower run hours once the basement stabilizes near the target of 30–50% relative humidity.
Cutting the number down
- Raise the setpoint toward 50% rather than chasing 35%.
- Fix bulk-water sources first — a dehumidifier fighting a leak never cycles off.
- Choose a certified unit with a better efficiency rating in the same capacity class.
- Keep the filter and coil clean so run time per pint stays low.
- Drain continuously so the unit is not idle with a full bucket during peak humidity.
