Sizing: basement dehumidifier guides

Capacity is the one decision you cannot fix later. Too small and the unit runs nonstop and never reaches the EPA target range of 30-50% relative humidity. Too large for the space and it short-cycles, which wastes energy and dehumidifies unevenly.
Every guide below states capacity under the current DOE test procedure. The 2019 revision dropped the test chamber from 80F to 65F, so a machine once labeled 70 pints is now labeled about 50 pints. Same hardware, smaller number - and the single most common reason homeowners buy a unit that is too small.

Frequently asked questions
Is bigger always safer when sizing a basement dehumidifier?
Oversizing is more forgiving than undersizing, but not free. A unit far larger than the space reaches setpoint quickly and short-cycles, which reduces moisture removal per kilowatt-hour and can leave pockets of the basement untreated. Choose the top of the appropriate range rather than jumping two classes.
Do I size on square footage or on how wet the basement is?
Both. AHAM-style sizing charts start with square footage and then add capacity for the moisture condition, from damp to very wet. A 1,000 sq ft basement that stays at 60% RH and a 1,000 sq ft basement with visible dampness after every rain are not the same job.
Does ceiling height change the answer?
Sizing charts assume roughly 8-foot ceilings. A basement with 9- or 10-foot ceilings holds proportionally more air, so treat it as a larger floor area when you are near the boundary between two capacity classes.
What if the basement is cold?
Compressor dehumidifiers lose capacity as air temperature falls, and many are not rated below about 41F. If the space runs cold year round, either choose a model rated for low-temperature operation with automatic defrost, or consider a desiccant unit.
