Why does a compressor dehumidifier freeze up in cold basements?
Compressor units cool coils below the surrounding air temperature; in cold basements this can drop the coil below freezing and form frost. Desiccant units have no cold coil, so they don't have this failure mode. See dehumidifier freezing up.
