What's the difference between desiccant and compressor dehumidifiers?

Compressor (refrigerant) dehumidifiers cool air across coils to condense moisture, similar to an air conditioner. Desiccant dehumidifiers pull air across a moisture-absorbing material (like silica gel) that is then dried out by a heater. This is a mechanical difference stated in manufacturer literature, not a performance claim from testing.

Why does a compressor dehumidifier freeze up in cold basements?

Compressor units cool coils below the surrounding air temperature; in cold basements this can drop the coil below freezing and form frost. Desiccant units have no cold coil, so they don't have this failure mode. See dehumidifier freezing up.

Which type costs more to run per pint of water removed?

Based on wattage-to-capacity ratios in manufacturer specs, desiccant units generally use more energy per pint of water removed than compressor units, since they draw meaningful wattage (180W) while removing far less water daily than a 480–745W compressor unit removing tens of pints.
