How continuous gravity drain works
A gravity drain replaces bucket-emptying with a hose that runs from the unit's drain port to a floor drain, sump pit or utility tub. There is no motor involved: water leaves only because the whole hose falls, continuously, from the port to the outlet. If any section rises — even over a floor joist or a rolled-up extension cord — water pools there and the unit reverts to filling its bucket.
That is the whole decision. A drain below the outlet means gravity, and gravity is quieter, cheaper and has nothing to break. A drain above the outlet means you need a pump instead — compare those in our built-in pump comparison.
Hose size, threading and what is in the box
- Thread size: basement dehumidifiers in this class use a standard 3/4-inch garden-hose thread (GHT) drain port, so an ordinary garden hose, washing-machine hose or 3/4-inch vinyl tubing with a threaded adapter will fit.
- Hose usually sold separately: most manufacturers ship the unit with a port and a cap, not a hose. Budget a few dollars for a short hose rather than assuming one is included.
- Length: use the shortest hose that reaches. Long runs sag, and sag is where clogs start.
- Reinforced over thin-wall: thin vinyl kinks behind a unit pushed against a wall; a reinforced or garden-style hose holds its shape.
- Cap the bucket port: hand-tighten only. Over-tightening cracks the plastic collar, which is a slow leak you will find weeks later.
